Quick Bio
Assigned Female at birth, Janet White had a strong sense of justice instilled into her by her great grandfather, a WWII vet that was the first hero to adopt the name of Captain Ultra as his superhero persona (the previous wielder went by the name The Hand of Justice or America’s Hand as wars broke out overseas). Janet quickly won the affection of Grandpappy Ethan with her “spitfire attitude” and was always the favorite amongst Grandpappy’s grandchildren and great grandchildren. She did well in school during the early 2000’s and was even selected by Grandpappy Ethan to inherit the title of Captain Ultra when he was ready for retirement by the time she turned 16. Grandpappy Ethan thoroughly encouraged her to pursue a civilian career as a lawyer so that she could know the law she’ll be enforcing eventually, because of Grandpappy Ethan’s insistence of “I still got a lot of years in me yet, so you best get yerself a good learnin’ while I’m still kicking.” Janet took this advice and studied pre-law and law through college, graduating from law school by the age of 26 at the top of her class. As a graduation gift to her, Grandpappy Ethan publicly announced his retirement and declared that his successor would be a woman with the bold statement of “It’s 2020 and we’ve had too many men wearing tights. It’s about damn time we have a woman wearing my cape.” Janet initially kept her identity a secret for the first few years of her career as a superhero, but by the age of 32 she decided to go public with her superhero identity, mostly to live off city money while she does her hero stuff and to actually secure herself some time off while she carried to term the pregnancy of her son Ethan, named after her beloved Grandpappy. Unfortunately, Grandpappy Ethan didn’t live long after young Ethan was born, but on his deathbed he declared that he was “damned proud of my spitfire and her spawn. I just wish that she was kinder to herself.” This stuck with Janet and she eventually decided to be true to herself and came out as transgender at the age of 38, taking up the name Jacob White. While initially met with some pushback, the city decided to his benefits and support, giving Jacob a much better living situation and offering him the lifesaving gender affirming care he needed. Jacob’s coming out really hit his nephew, Corbin, hard, and inspired him to start down the path that would eventually see him selected by Jacob as the next captain Ultra. Post transition, Jacob kept up his relationship with the father of his child, a police officer and eventual chief named Adrian Schulte. However, the transphobia of average citizens, his nemeses in the Enhanced Human world, and the stress of raising his son got to Jacob and he decided to take up the search for a successor for whenever he decided to give up the life of a hero. He took a young hero named Valentina under his wing by the age of 45, training up the enby hero to hopefully succeed him at some point. However, Corbin grew in his esteem and he eventually chose his nephew to be his successor. In spite of being replaced as a successor, Valentina maintained a good relationship with their mentor, vowing to help Corbin should he actually need the help following Jacob’s retirement. Life for Jacob settled into a comfortable pattern. Jacob spent most of his days and nights protecting the city, but in his off time he prepared Corbin for the challenges that he would eventually face as the next Captain Ultra. However, just before Corbin’s graduation from college, the stress got to Jacob again and life seemed unbearable, but for different reasons. Enemies hitting harder and committing more heinous crimes, a resurgence in anti-LGBT sentiment in the country, and Ethan acting out in his job as a lab assistant. It all became too much for Jacob, and by the time our story starts, Jacob decided to spend one last day as Captain Ultra before he says goodbye to the world…
